Building permit for a carport – When is it required?

If you’re thinking of putting up a carport, you’re probably wondering whether you need to apply for a building permit (byggetilladelse). The rules in Denmark depend mainly on the size of the carport and where it is placed on your plot. Here is an overview of when a building permit is required and what you need to be aware of.

General rules on building permits

As a general rule, an ordinary open carport of up to 50 m² does not require a building permit. If you stay under this size, you can usually build the carport without involving the municipality (kommune).

However, there are important exceptions:

  • Several small buildings on the plot: If you already have other sheds, outbuildings or similar, you need to pay attention to the total floor area. If your existing small buildings together with the new carport exceed 50 m², you go over the limit and must apply for a building permit .
  • Carports larger than 50 m²: All carports with a floor area of more than 50 m² always require a building permit from the municipality. The authorities will look at the construction, among other things, and whether it complies with the requirements of the Danish Building Regulations (bygningsreglementet).
  • Placement close to the boundary: If you want to place the carport right next to the boundary (closer than 2,5 metres to the neighbouring boundary), this may trigger additional requirements. You may need to apply for a separate dispensation or building permit, even if the carport is small. In addition, the height at the boundary must not exceed 2,5 m out of consideration for neighbours.
  • Local plans and easements: Always check your local plan (lokalplan) and any easements (servitutter) for the area. These may contain special requirements for placement, appearance or materials that you must follow.

So as a rule of thumb: if the carport is under 50 m² and complies with the distance requirements, you can usually avoid needing a permit. If it is larger or placed close to the boundary, you must apply for a permit from the municipality.

Even if a building permit itself may not be required in certain circumstances, the project must always comply with building legislation. This means, for example, that the site coverage ratio (bebyggelsesprocent) on your plot must be within the permitted limits, and that the carport must be registered in the BBR (the Danish Building and Housing Register) once it is finished, even if you did not need to apply for a permit.

How to apply for a building permit

If you find that your carport requires a building permit, you must submit an application to your municipality. This is normally done digitally via the “Byg og Miljø” portal. You will need to submit relevant drawings, dimensions and a description of the project.

The municipality will then assess whether the project complies with the Building Regulations and local rules before granting permission. Processing times can vary, so allow plenty of time. What if the carport is enclosed or converted?

A carport is defined as an open structure (typically open on at least two sides). If you later decide to convert your carport into a garage by enclosing it with walls and a door, the building’s status changes from open to enclosed.

A carport that previously did not require a permit may therefore require a building permit as a garage, as it must then meet all the requirements for a proper building (insulation, fire safety, etc.). If you are planning a structure that resembles a garage from the outset, you will therefore need a permit.
